I think almost everyone likes to feel useful. While lying in bed one night not able to sleep I was trying to think what makes people happy. I think that if you make people feel needed and not taken for granted then they feel happier. I even tested this theory on my 3 year old. He helped bring dishes to the sink after we ate. I told him "Thank you, what would I do with out you." He stood up taller and smiled. So let the people that mean the most to you know that they are appreciated, wanted and needed. The hard part is finding a way to express this. I would give a small gift, and put on the tag "thanks for being there", or "I'm glad I know you", or "you really helped me out through the holidays", "I couldn't have done it without you, thanks".

I'm not a very verbally expressive person, but I think this year that is my resolution: to let the people who make me smile know that they do make my life a little happier.
